Romeo & Juliet

Untitled-1302.jpg

Production Role - Actor - Lord Capulet

Romeo & Juliet was a show put on by the University of Minnesota Morris Theatre Discipline in the fall of 2022. It was costumed and staged under a contemporarily, and the timeless story of two senseless feuding houses was told through the conceptual lens of polarized modern American politics. This is a play that that been done in many modern concepts, but there have been none that have resonated with me as much as this portrayal. Through my process working on his show I began to realize how much of a pedestal many works of Shakespeare and similar pieces of the time are seen on. With language that is so different from how we talk and understand, it is easy for the characters to feel distant, but by bringing the story to a place that felt so current and real, while maintaining the artistic integrity of the piece, it became abundantly clear just how human each character was and how close and intimate the narrative was to many people's own lived experience. Capulet was an incredible character to explore this through with his many layers of emotion, and dangerous anger. It was a thrill to bring him to life.
